Bargwanna Cracks Top 10 at Sandown

A fantastic drive and an even better race strategy have handed Sprint Gas Racing’s Jason Bargwanna a top 10 result at Sandown Raceway (yesterday).

Bargwanna finished ninth on a strategy identical to race winner Garth Tander.

"I was confident that I had a top 10 race car this weekend - today I proved it,” Jason Bargwanna said.

“It’s exciting for the team because we knew we had the equipment to achieve this, but had fallen short over the last few races.

“This is a really great result and something to build upon.

“The team was fantastic today; the pit stop was a beauty.

“Some have suggested that we save the soft tyres for the end of the race, but that is a huge gamble and only works if you have a safety car. Without one you’re no where.

“Our strategy was identical to HRT’s; had we had more pace we would have been a little higher. I’m happy – for sure.”

Greg Murphy endured a freak accident that spoiled what could have been a great result following his 10th place race start.

“I was right behind Todd Kelly who was having problems with his tyres, he had a moment and I tapped him, what resulted was an open bonnet,” Greg Murphy said. “The impact was nothing too big, but it dislodged all four bonnet pins and the bonnet jolted up completely covering the windscreen. I had very limited sight.

"What a freak accident. I don’t think in a hundred years you could hit another car and have the same end result.

“On top of this we had a faulty fuel rig that stopped well short of filling the car. It shut off and I was released only to find we were sixteen odd kilos short of fuel. So I had to pit again.

“Talk about a disaster of a day. No one’s fault, it just happened. It was extremely disappointing because I qualified well and thought I was in with a chance of making the top 10.”
