Car Owners Can Lower Emissions - And Save Money Too!
The Motor Trade Association (MTA) has called on all vehicle owners to do their part in getting emissions down.
Cabinet has announced that New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions target for 2020 will be 10 to 20 per cent down on 1990 levels.
“But this can be more than 40 per cent down on present levels, which means that all motorists have an important role to play, if this target is to be achieved,” said MTA spokesman, Andy Cuming.
“Transport generates 20 per cent of all emissions.
“We strongly encourage all owners to get their vehicles emissions-tested and tuned by their service technician. It is then important to keep to a regular service schedule to maintain improved performance,” he said.
“The average age of the national car fleet is 12.6 years – too old by today’s standards of emissions technology.
“New and more cleaner cars now coming on to the market will make a difference, but not fast enough to achieve the 2020 target overall, and anyway all cars must be serviced regularly for optimal performance.”
Andy Cuming said that the ‘up side’ for owners was that when their cars performed better they used less fuel, offsetting the petrol price rises anticipated.
“All vehicle owners can get good advice on this from an MTA member technician,” he said
