“Sleep In Bargs!” – Noske

Sprint Gas Racing’s Mark Noske is hoping his Bathurst co-driver Jason Bargwanna will sleep in at Bathurst this Sunday.

Jason Bargwanna and Mark Noske were teamed together at Bathurst in 1997 with Bargwanna driving the car in the morning warm-up session. History shows that Bargwanna went into the wall and the duo were unable to start the great race.

It may have occurred 13 years ago and Mark Noske may have forgiven but he’s never forgotten.

“I’m going to be pretty happy if Bargs sleeps in on race day,” Noske smiled.

“I might slip a super heavy duty sleeping pill into his cup of tea on Saturday night, just to be sure.

“I didn’t even get to practice a driver change over let alone drive the car on the Sunday.

“It better not happen again, I’m not sure if I can forgive twice.”

In 1997 the Holden Young Lions pairing of Bargwanna and Noske were one of the strongest teams on the track. They recorded the fastest time in qualifying, holding provisional pole, but dropped to fifth after the top 10 shootout.

During the 20 minute warm-up session on the Sunday morning, Bargwanna drove the car straight into the wall at Forrest Elbow. The damage to the car was so great that it was impossible for him and Noske to start the race.

It was a shattering moment for the team, particularly Bargwanna.

“I made a rookie mistake, simple as that,” Bargwanna said.

“It goes down as one of the most disappointing moments of my career, we had a very competitive car and we were one of the teams in contention for the win.

“Going into the wall at Forest Elbow did some serious damage. I knew as soon as we hit that it was all over for the day.

“What I’ve learnt is that Nosk (Mark Noske) will do the warm up this year and I won’t. It’s the least I can do for him. It might also strengthen the friendship.” Bargwanna joked.

Jason Bargwanna and Mark Noske are teamed together in the #3 Sprint Gas Racing Holden Commodore for this weekend’s Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Sunday’s Great Race starts at 10.30am.
