Snow Tyre Decision Applauded Says MTA

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) strongly applauds the Minister of Transport’s decision to ban the mixing of snow tyres with standard tyres from 1 April next year.

MTA spokesman Dougal Morrison says MTA has advocated strongly for this ban over the past 3 years.  MTA also promoted that should snow tyres be used that they should have a minimum tread depth of 4 millimetres. This aligns with regulations in other countries.

“MTA would prefer that a ban be placed on the importation of second hand snow tyres, particularly on second hand vehicles entering the country,” said Dougal Morrison.   “New Zealand just becomes a dumping ground for used snow tyres from overseas, notably Japan, and the tyres are often used in inappropriate conditions.”
