Tax Poll Shows Uncertainty Among MTA Members
Last week MTA put a poll out to Members seeking their views on the Government's proposed package deal combining higher GST with lower income tax.
Around 125 Members responded to the poll, which found that Members are uncertain how the proposed changes will impact on their business. Almost 60 percent of Members polled do not support the proposed GST increase, with 40 percent believing it will have a negative impact on their business, while 47 percent were unsure.
85 percent of Members opted for the reduction and re-alignment of corporate and personal tax rates and 15 percent said no. Asked how the increase would impact on their business; 50 percent said positively, 44 percent were unsure and only eight percent believed that it would have a negative impact.
The results closely mirror TVNZ-Colmar Brunton’ poll on Wednesday, which surveyed 1000 people. The poll found 69 percent were opposed to a rise in GST to 15 percent and 63 percent did not believe they would be better off after the GST rise and tax cuts package. The poll also showed scepticism at the Government’s goal of catching up with Australian incomes by 2025.
It is expected that details of the changes will be announced on 20 May 2010.
