NZ Motorsport: New Race Series for South Island
An exciting new motor racing concept – the STC Race Series – is about to be unleashed on the South Island. The Super Touring Car Race Series will be a welcome addition to the local motorsport scene with a varied line-up of machinery fighting it out for a share of the prizemoney.
The new category will cater for series production-based touring, grand touring, and road-going cars of steel monocoque construction that have been modified for improved performance. The rules allow a reasonable freedom of modification that will encourage kiwi ingenuity.
Already the series has attracted major sponsorship from Link Engine Management, so the series will be referred to as the LINK STC Race Series. The first placegetter overall in the series will receive $1500, second $1000 and third $500. There will be four classes – STC-A, STC-B, STV-C and STC-D – and the top three placegetters in each class for the series will receive $500, $250 and $100 respectively.
The series will accommodate cars of different levels of modification and a time-bracket system will operate to split the cars into their respective classes. Engines may be transplanted into bodyshells with the same number of cylinders. Slick tyres or road tyres are permitted but with limits to the width, to reduce costs to commonly available lower cost tyres.
