Consumer law reform issue gains traction in the media

For some time MTA has been advocating on the proposed consumer law reforms surrounding online trading and one law. The proposed reforms affect many members in our industry.

In late July, MTA made a submission to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs on the Consumer Law Reform. MTA’s view is that online auctions should be treated like any other auction, which are not covered by the CGA.

It has also been positive to see a significant amount of media coverage on MTA’s view point. A recent article in the Sunday Star Times, although not entirely accurate representation of MTA’s stance, is a promising sign that media are starting to take notice and begin to cover the issues surrounding the proposed reforms.

MTA has met with Trade Me and Consumer NZ along with other representative organisations to consider respective positions taken on the Consumer Law Reform Discussion document. From this, a further meeting will be held in November with all relevant parties to consider each other’s positions and to see if any common ground exists.
