Murph Smiling at Hamilton
Sprint Gas Racing’s Greg Murphy is smiling again thanks to a sixth place in practice at the Hamilton 400 in New Zealand today.
Murphy ran the three stage practice session on the one set of tyres, resisting the urge to put green tyres on in the dying stages.
“The key here is the tyres,” Greg Murphy said.
“We decided to run the entire day on one set of tyres to see how well the car would run and not use a set of new tyres.
“The car was fast at the end of practice; we were only three-10th off (the fastest time).
“We’re pretty sure that the cars ahead of me were on new tyres, so it feels pretty good to be in that company.
“Having a fast car on old tyres is a massive bonus and something we’ve been striving for all year.
“We’ll have a good bank of tyres for qualifying tomorrow which is so much more important that being fastest on Friday.
“I expect us to go faster tomorrow.”
Murphy was very happy with the Sprint Gas Commodore.
“The car’s feeling pretty good,” Greg Murphy said.
“We ran well all day and made some good changes.
“Having said that we didn’t make big changes, they were only very minor.
“We went back to the Winton test day base and from what we learnt at Clipsal and AGP we’ve made a more competitive car that seems to be well suited to Hamilton.
“It’s very early in the weekend but we spent the majority of today’s practice in or near the top five, so yeah, I’m feeling confident that we can continue to put it all together.
“Pay day is tomorrow, but it’s good to be up the front.”
Murphy’s team mate Jason Bargwanna again missed out on track time but the problems with the car were fixed by the third stage of practice.
“It’s frustrating to miss out on so much track time, but we got on with things and had a car that ran quite well towards the end of the day,” Bargwanna said.
“One of the problems we had turned out not to be a problem but we needed to check it out to make sure. This took a bit of time to do.
“I’m still learning the track, but I we’ll be right, we’ll be faster and more competitive tomorrow.”
